September 21 is the Feast Day of St. Matthew. This painting will be a focal point of celebrations for the Jubilee for Catechists this weekend. (Sept 23-Sept 25).
Caravaggio’s Call of St Matthew. it hangs in the Contarelli Chapel in San Luigi dei Francesi, Rome. This depicts the scene that is the basis of Pope Francis episcopal motto: “Miserando atque eligendo,” which means “because he saw him through the eyes of mercy and chose him.”
