The Year of Consecrated Life was inaugurated on November 29, 2014, with a Prayer Vigil in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, Rome, and will end on February 2, 2016, with the celebration of the World Day for Consecrated Life. The launch will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the publication of Perfectae Caritatis, the Second Vatican Council Decree on the Adaptation and Renewal of Religious Life, promulgated on October 28, 1965. Pope Francis announced in November 2013 the Church will have a special year of 14 months dedicated to the consecrated life, extending throughout all of 2015. To mark its beginning, the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life has released a letter to consecrated men and women entitled “Rejoice”. Dioceses and religious communities in Canada and throughout the world are organizing events and initiatives as part of the year, in addition to the international celebrations and meetings which will be held in Rome.
