Social Studies and Humanities Curriculum for Ontario

The Ontario Ministry of Education released new curriculum documents recently. They include Elementary Social Studies/History & Geography ( http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum/elementary/sshg18curr2013.pdf ) and Secondary Social Science and Humanities Curriculum. (http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum/secondary/sstudies9to122013.pdf ) The secondary document is used in some schools to guide the Grade 11 World Religions course. Other schools use the updated guidelines from the Institute for Catholic Education. (http://www.iceont.ca/resources/1/World%20Relgions%20Gr%2011%20Revised%20Expectations.pdf)

Of particular interest is the emphasis on an integrated research and inquiry strand. This strand is not only important in noting discrete skills to be mastered but also emphasizing a pedagogical approach that moves from Exploring to Investigating to Processing Information to Communicating and Reflecting. This movement is not always sequential. See pages 22 and 23 of the Secondary document for more detail.
